If you've recently had your eyes recently examined at Costco Optical in New Rochelle by esteemed Dr. Chris DiGiorgio, you may noticed that an eye examination is actually a variety of vision-related tests. While some of these tests allow your
Eastchester optometrist to examine the interior structures of the eye to potentially diagnose eye diseases and disorders, some of the simpelst tests are performed to test your visual acuity and eyesight. Two such exams are refraction and the visual field test, both often performed at the very beginning of your comprehensive eye examination with Dr. DiGiorgio.
Refraction is a vision test that ascertains your best visual acuity with using corrective lenses. Though refraction can be determined with computerized equipment, most doctors use a phoroptor, an instrument which holds corrective lenses in front of the eye. Refraction is often performed in front of an eye chart and our
Eastchester eye doctor will ask you questions regarding the clarity of the letters you see while making small adjustments to the optical power of the lens. First, each eye will be tested individually and when you are seeing your best, the eyes will be tested together. Refraction is necessary to correct common refractive disorders such as nearsightedness and farsightedness, which result in blurry vision at distant and close-by distances, respectively. These refractive errors are easily remedied with prescription eyeglasses or contact lenses, the specific optical powers of your lenses are determined during refraction testing.

A visual field test on the other hand, monitors and evaluates your peripheral vision. This simple test can provide your doctor with additional information about the neurological function of the retina, optic nerve, and brain. Most often, the visual field test can reveal peripheral vision loss as a result of glaucoma, an eye disease that damages the optic nerve in elderly patients. Visual field tests are also used as a screening test prior to any kind of eye surgery. For this test, you'll sit in front of the instrument with your eyes staring straight ahead at a central point. When the test begins you'll press a button every time you see a light appear in the outer rings of your visual field. However, it is important to remain looking at the central point and not move your eyes toward to the light.
The visual field test and refraction are just two of the many vision-related tests performed during a comprehensive eye examination at Costco Optical with Dr. DiGiorgio. To learn more about what tests are involved in an eye health evaluation, schedule an appointment with Dr. DiGiorgio!
