Contact lenses provide a safe and effective alternative to eyeglasses. Not only are they less hassle throughout the day, you'll have a better range of vision with contact lenses than with glasses. Just like eyeglasses however, contact lenses must be designed and fitted for each patient. In this case, contact lenses are unique to an individual eye shape and contour, which is determined through a standard contact lens exam with Dr. DiGiorgio at Costco Optical in New Rochelle.
During a contact lens exam, New Rochelle eye doctor, Dr. DiGiorgio will use an instrument called a keratometer to measure the curvature of your eye's clear front surface called the cornea. These measurements or K-readings help your optometrist determine the proper curve and size for your contact lenses. Some types of contact lens fitting require that your doctor also know the size of your pupils in different lighting conditions as well as the diameter of your cornea. Pupil and iris measurements help achieve a proper sizing and orientation of your contact lens.
Lastly, the health of your cornea will be evaluated using a biomicroscope or slit lamp. This information is critical for determining the type of contact lens & wear schedule, as well as establish a baseline for your doctor to evaluate any future changes to your eyes related to contact lens wear.
Once you're fitted for contact lenses, you'll still need to have follow-up visits and exams to ensure that your prescription has not changed and your contact lenses are not irritating your eyes. Don't forget that a contact lens prescription is only valid for one year from your last New Rochelle eye examination. Once this prescription has expired, you will need to get a new exam to not only check for changes in your prescription, but to identify any potential problems in their early stages before symptoms are visibly present.
